Water treatment process upgrades require necessary precautions for fish and herptiles
WEYBURN – The City of Weyburn recently announced changes to its water treatment process, transitioning from free chlorine to chloramines for disinfection in its potable water distribution system, commencing August 2.
While this change ensures safer and better water quality for residents, the City extends a special reminder to those who have aquariums and terrariums in their homes.
Fish and herptile species can be sensitive to chloramine residuals, and it is crucial to take the necessary precautions to maintain a healthy aquatic environment. Residents with aquariums and terrariums should take the following steps:
Equip your aquarium with a filtration system that has a carbon filter and ammonia reducing filter.
- These filters will maintain proper aquarium cycle.
A de-chlorinating treatment should be used every time Weyburn tap water is added.
- The de-chlorinator treatment will remove chloramine residuals.
These items are readily available at local pet stores, safeguarding the well-being of fish and herptiles.
While there is no anticipated concern for dogs or cats experiencing renal failure to consume water from the tap, it is essential to avoid directly injecting chloraminated water into the bloodstream, such as during dialysis. For more detailed advice and guidance, the City strongly recommends consulting your veterinarian.
The City of Weyburn cares about the health and happiness of all pets within our community, and wants to ensure that residents and pet owners are well-informed about this change to our water treatment process.
The City’s water treatment staff take immense pride in maintaining the highest safety standards for our water supply, adhering to guidelines set forth by the Water Security Agency (WSA).
