There are exciting new improvements happening at the Weyburn Airport! The community has come together to see the installation of a new jet fuel system as well as a GPS approach which will both provide the ability for larger aircraft to use the facility, as well as enhance the safety of our airport.
A huge thank you to all of those who donated both monetary and in-kind to see these projects come to fruition; and they are:
The Saskatchewan Oil & Gas Show, Cenovus Energy, Jerry Mainil Ltd., Pro-Touch Signs, Industrial Electric, Souris Valley Industries, Prairie Sky Co-op, Weyburn Credit Union, Dragon Products North, Barber Motors, Maurice Swertz and Donald & Brian Goranson.
The Weyburn Airport is located one mile east and one mile north of the existing City of Weyburn limits. It is a four-directional airport with 06-24 and 12-30 directions available. Runway 12-30 is a 4,000 ft. by 125 ft. runway completed in 1988. The alternate runway, 06-24 (limited maintenance), received an asphalt recap and storm sewer in 1996.
Weyburn Airport was constructed in late 1941 as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. In its barely two years of operation from 1942-1944, it graduated 1,055 pilots and recorded more than 180,000 hours of flight time. The peak month was April of 1943, when over 12,000 hours were logged by 146 aircraft; 136 being single engine Harvard’s and 10 twin engine Avro Ansons. The station was abandoned on June 30, 1944.
