If you see a colony of wasps on city owned property such as in a city tree, contact the City of Weyburn by filling out this form.
What you can do if you find a wasp colony on private property:
- Preventing wasps from nesting around your home is your first line pf defense against unpleasant wasp encounters
- There are several non-restricted commercial sprays and dust options available. Be sure you take protective measures and are covered head to toe and follow manufacturer’s specifications when using chemicals
- Best time to attempt to destroy a wasp nest or colony is when it’s cool or early in the morning or at night. Wasps are most active during the day and agitating a nest will signal the wasps to attack
- Remove and eliminate any food sources such as fruit, sugars, etc.
- Use traps such as pop bottles with fruit juices that can be installed away from gathering areas
- Fake wasp nests can be hung, wasps are territorial and do not want to build a nest near another nest
- Seal entry points to your home such as vents, torn screens, cracks around windows and door frames. Observe the flight path of a wasp, especially in the morning, which will reveal the entry/exit point
- For problematic colonies on private property, there are registered pest control companies to assist homeowners
- Eliminate entry points. Seal cracks, gaps and openings into your house with steel wool and caulking. This can be difficult due to a mouse’s ability to squeeze itself into the smallest opening
- Use mouse traps, there are many options available. Place traps next to walls as mice naturally scurry along walls
- Remove and eliminate food sources
- Remove debris around your home garage and yard where mice can hide and nest
- If you have a pet, they may deter mice
- Use of poisons or chemicals should be used as a last resort. Always follow directions carefully and avoid using them around pets and children
