There is no permit required to install or construct a fence around or within your property boundaries. However, there are regulations within the Zoning Bylaw, that you must follow.
The maximum height requirement for a fence is:
- Not more than 2.44m (8′) in height for the portion of fence that extends beyond the front yard area (front yard area is from the front property line back 25′)
- Not more than .75m (2.5′) in height in the front yard area
On corner sites where a dwelling unit faces the flankage side of the property, the fence shall not be more than .75m (2.5′) in height from the front property line a(the property line along the narrowest portion of the site facing a street) to the farthest point of the dwelling unit away from the front property line.
Locate your pins! When building a fence or planting a hedge, it is advised you measure carefully to determine the exact location of the property lines. A Surveyor’s Certificate or Real Property Report can be used to locate property site lines. It is the responsibility of the property owner to ensure the accurate location of fencing relative to their property lines. Probably the best way to ensure that no problems are encountered with regard to your fence location is to try to keep just within your property boundaries.
