WEYBURN – The City of Weyburn announced plans Monday for a new multi-purpose sports, culture and recreation facility that will offer important healthy and accessible opportunities to its community.
The Weyburn Recreation and Culture Centre (WRCC) is a progressive step forward for the City of Weyburn. The facility will be completely accessible with barrier-free access points to the building and interior features including the art gallery, pottery studio, multi-purpose rooms, indoor track, simulator room, mini gym, multi-use synthetic field, children’s play space and outdoor ice surface.
“We believe the WRCC will ensure enjoyable experiences to our region for years to come,” Director of Leisure Services Andrew Crowe said. “The art and leisure opportunities encompassed in the new facility will provide avenues for expression, promote health and wellness, enhance our sense of community and will provide enjoyment to community members for multiple generations.”
Located in Jubilee Park, the WRCC will optimize the park as a multi-use, multi-generational space that currently includes the Weyburn Leisure Centre, 1.5 km of paved pathways, baseball diamonds, soccer pitches, football fields, tennis courts, playground and outdoor rink.
The facility is a community partnership project with the Southeast Cornerstone School Division. The WRCC will be owned and operated by the City of Weyburn (projected cost of $25 million) and the adjacent elementary school will be owned and operated by the school division.
“We are thrilled to be embarking in partnership with the Southeast Cornerstone School Division,” Crowe said. “The joint-use agreement which will ensure community members and students have opportunities to make use of the arts and leisure amenities offered in both facilities.”
The WRCC project was awarded to Wright Construction on Jan. 28, 2019. The first phase of construction is set to begin in March and is anticipated to be complete spring of 2021. Commissioning is to take place April to June 2021 with substantial completion projected for June 2021. The proposed official opening is scheduled for September 2021.
