WEYBURN – The City of Weyburn would like to recognize the efforts of City staff and the Facilities Manager in identifying and responding to a minor ammonia leak at Crescent Point Place and Tom Zandee Sports Arena. Their prompt actions ensured the situation was handled safely and effectively, preventing what could have been a far more serious incident involving ammonia gas.
“The quick thinking and professionalism of our team were instrumental in managing this issue safely,” said Andrew Crowe, Director of Leisure Services. “Their actions highlight the dedication our staff bring to ensuring the safety of our facilities and the community.”
Non-destructive testing on the ice plant chiller is now being conducted by third-party inspectors to evaluate the extent of the issue. The City expects results early next week and remains optimistic that the necessary repairs can be made without long term impacts to the 2024/25 season.
Both arenas will remain closed until repairs are complete, the ice plant is fully operational, and ice surfaces are safe to be utilized.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
