Updated Sept. 7 @ 5:30 p.m.
Heavy rainfall over a short period on Monday, Sept. 7 has caused damage to homes, businesses and areas throughout Weyburn.
City crews and emergency services have been working across the community throughout the day, responding to urgent needs and addressing the areas hardest hit by flooding.
The City recognizes that many residents and business owners are dealing with significant impacts and uncertainty following today’s flooding.
“Today has been an incredibly difficult day for many people in Weyburn,” said Mayor Jeff Richards. “We know families and businesses are dealing with damage to their properties. I want to sincerely thank our City crews, emergency services, volunteers and community members who have worked throughout the day to keep people safe and respond where they are needed. The way people stepped up for this community today matters, and that same commitment to one another will be important in the days ahead. There is still a lot of work ahead, and we will continue doing what we can to support our community as we assess the damage and move into recovery.”
The intensity and volume of Monday’s rainfall resulted in a significant overland flooding event, exceeding what municipal drainage systems are designed to immediately manage during extreme rainfall
The City’s focus remains public safety, response and assessing the extent of damage across Weyburn.
Residents are asked to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from flooded areas and give crews and emergency responders space to work. Call 911 if flooding creates an immediate threat to life or safety.
The City will provide a further community update Tuesday morning, Sept. 8, as more information becomes available.
Updates will continue to be shared through weyburn.ca, Weyburn Alerts and the City’s official social media channels.
