The Technical Safety Authority of Saskatchewan (TSASK) has shared important information to help residents understand electrical and gas safety before, during and after a flood.
Residents whose homes or properties have been affected by flooding are encouraged to review the guidance before entering flooded areas, restoring power or attempting to use electrical or gas equipment that may have been exposed to water.
Electrical equipment exposed to water may appear safe but can be extremely dangerous to reuse. Residents should never enter an area where electrical receptacles are underwater and appliances remain plugged in, or stand in water to operate breakers. Flood-damaged properties may also require a permit and inspection before power can be reconnected.
Gas appliances that have been submerged should not be relit. Furnaces, water heaters and other gas appliances exposed to flood water can create fire, explosion and carbon monoxide hazards and should be assessed by a licensed gas contractor.
