Weyburn Fire Department responded to a structure fire at an apartment building in the 400 block of First Avenue NW at approximately 9:21 p.m. on July 30.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered light smoke throughout the building. Crews investigated the source, checking individual suites and the building’s exterior before locating the fire in a crawl space beneath the apartment building.
The fire was quickly contained and extinguished. Firefighters then pressurized the hallways to ventilate the building and direct smoke out through windows and doors.
Four Weyburn Fire Department vehicles responded, including the command, engine, ladder and rescue trucks, with 14 firefighters on scene. Weyburn Police Service and Emergency Medical Services also attended and assisted with the response.
No injuries were reported. Residents were able to return to the building at approximately 12:30 a.m.
Acting Fire Chief Mike Wock reminds residents to call 9-1-1 whenever they hear a fire alarm.
“Do not assume someone else has called or that the building’s alarm system is being monitored,” Wock said. “It is never wrong to call 9-1-1 when an alarm is sounding.”
Weyburn Fire Department thanks the building’s residents for their patience and cooperation while crews worked to extinguish the fire, ventilate the building and ensure it was safe for occupants to return.
