The City of Weyburn is empowered under the Urban Municipality Act to regulate and control persons owning or harbouring any animal or class of animal within the City of Weyburn.
Bylaw No. 97-1942 regulates and controls the ownership and possession of dogs and cats within the City of Weyburn.
No owner shall permit any dog or cat to run at large in the City, “Run at Large” means not being under control of the owner or any person acting on his of her behalf or by confinement.
No person shall possess or harbour more than three dogs or cats over the age of six months, except for dogs or cats kept in the ordinary course of business by the proprietors of a veterinary clinic, boarding kennel, grooming parlour, public pound, pet store or animal shelter.
The Weyburn Humane Society is in charge of animal control in the City of Weyburn. Dogs and cats found running at large are delivered to the Weyburn Humane Society Animal Shelter located at 57 – 16th Street NE. If you have lost your animal, contact the Weyburn Humane Society Animal Shelter at 848 7387. Impounded animals not claimed within 72 hours may be sold. If not sold after 96 hours, the animals may be destroyed.
It is an offence to tease, entice, bait or throw objects at a dog or cat confined within its owner’s personal property. Every person having ownership or control of a dog or cat shall immediately remove all excrement left by such dog or cat on any property other than the owner’s personal property.
Penalties imposed under this Bylaw range from a minimum of $40 to a maximum of $500.
It is an offence against the Criminal Code of Canada to cause or permit unnecessary suffering or injury to an animal, to neglect a captive or domestic animal, or to encourage the fighting of animals.
