Released December 15, 2020

Brent VanDeSype signs his Oath of Office as the new Deputy Chief of Police for the Weyburn Police Service on Dec. 15, 2020, at City Hall alongside City Solicitor Mike Weger (L), Mayor Marcel Roy and Chief of Police Jamie Blunden.
WEYBURN – The City of Weyburn and the Weyburn Police Service are pleased to announce Brent VanDeSype as the new Deputy Chief of Police.
Deputy VanDeSype knows the Weyburn area well, being born and raised on a family farm in the nearby town of Radville. VanDeSype joined the Weyburn Police Service in July of 2007 and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2015. He looks forward to the new challenge of being Deputy Chief.
“I’m both excited and nervous with the new challenge. It’ll be a big learning curve but I’m up for it and I’ll definitely do my best,” said VanDeSype.
“I never anticipated moving into a management position, but after having good discussions with the new Chief, I realized how genuine he was about community policing and how we shared a similar vision. I think we’ll work well together and hopefully we can improve our service to the community to be even better than it currently is.”
VanDeSype obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Criminal Justice in Lethbridge, AB, before moving to Vancouver Island where he was ultimately recruited by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Upon completion of training at RCMP Depot, VanDeSype was slated to be posted to Nanaimo, BC, but requested he be reassigned in order to stay in Saskatchewan.
Deputy VanDeSype and his family enjoyed almost six years in Watrous, SK, before he transferred to the Saskatoon Forensic Identification Services unit where he spent another year with the RCMP prior to joining the Weyburn Police Service.
As Deputy Chief, VanDeSype will work with Chief Jamie Blunden overseeing the management of the Weyburn Police Service’s activities including law enforcement, crime prevention, and education/awareness programs.
“We are excited to welcome Brent to this new position and look forward to him building on the goals and success of the Weyburn Police Service,” said Chief Jamie Blunden. “Brent is a dedicated member of our team and community and I am constantly impressed by his professionalism in law enforcement. We are honoured to have him help lead the Weyburn Police Service.”
