On April 26, the Water Security Agency (WSA) issued a water advisory for the southeast parts of the province along the Upper Souris and Long Creek basins.
The City of Weyburn advises the public to take precautions near water bodies as flows can change quickly. Please keep your distance from the Souris River as WSA and the City continue to monitor conditions.
Important messages from WSA pertaining to Weyburn: Warmer daytime temperatures, above freezing overnight and last week’s significant snowfalls are resulting in some runoff within the upper sections of the Souris River.
Flows on the Souris River above Weyburn are equivalent to about a one in three-year peak flow, which is slightly above normal for this time of year. Flows and levels may increase further with additional melt expected over the next few days.
While the Souris River through Weyburn will be higher than normal, flood related impacts are not expected. According to WSA, “there is potential for some localized impacts including possible overtopping of roads along the Souris River above Rafferty Reservoir and Long Creek, as well as smaller tributaries to them.”
WSA and the City of Weyburn will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as they develop.
