Taxis help people get to work, appointments, and home safely, and Weyburn now has clear local standards to support fair and accountable service.
On Jan. 12, City Council approved Bylaw No. 2025-3504 (Taxi Bylaw), the City’s first taxi bylaw, which sets expectations for licensing, vehicle standards, and driver requirements.
The bylaw sets standards that taxi companies and drivers must meet to operate in Weyburn, including:
- Licensing Requirements: All taxi companies and operators must obtain valid licenses from the City and Weyburn Police Service.
- Vehicle Standards: Annual safety inspections and compliance with SGI Light Vehicle Inspection requirements.
- Insurance: Mandatory liability insurance for all taxis.
- Fare Regulation: Taximeter use is required; fares are set at $5.50 base rate plus $0.25 per 100 metres, with waiting time at $0.65 per minute.
- Driver Qualifications: Criminal record and vulnerable sector checks, valid Class 4 or approved Class 5 license, and Certificate of Police Approval.
- Operational Rules: Display of licenses and fare decals, maintenance of trip records, prohibition of smoking/alcohol/drugs, and adherence to shortest practicable route.
- Enforcement: Penalties for non-compliance range from $250 to $10,000 for individuals and up to $25,000 for corporations. Licenses may be suspended or revoked for violations.
This bylaw gives passengers clear expectations: your taxi should be licensed, inspected, insured, and charging the set fare by meter. If service doesn’t meet those standards, there are now clear rules and enforcement options in place to support safe, fair service in Weyburn.
