The Weyburn Fire Department will welcome close to 250 firefighters from across Saskatchewan for Fire School, taking place October 23–25.
The event brings together participants from more than 15 fire departments, spanning communities from La Ronge to the southern Saskatchewan border, along with more than 50 instructors and support personnel.
With 14 course options, firefighters will participate in classroom and hands-on training, including live-fire exercises, vehicle extrication, heavy rescue, structural search and rescue and fire safety inspections.
The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency will also deliver specialized training in incident command and wildland fire suppression.
Training will take place at the Credit Union Spark Centre, Weyburn Comprehensive School and Weyburn Fire Hall.
“Bringing Fire School back to southeast Saskatchewan provides valuable training opportunities for departments that may not otherwise have access to these specialized courses,” said Acting Fire Chief Mike Wock. “It’s also an opportunity to bring firefighters together, share knowledge and showcase what Weyburn has to offer.”
Hosting the event has required extensive planning by Weyburn Fire Department members, including paid-on-call firefighters, with support from local businesses and organizations through sponsorships, supplies and training resources.
“This event wouldn’t be possible without the commitment of our firefighters and the tremendous support we’ve received from the community,” said Wock. “We’re proud to bring this training to southeast Saskatchewan and equally proud to showcase Weyburn to firefighters visiting from across the province.”
Beyond the training grounds, visiting participants will have opportunities to experience Weyburn’s businesses, facilities and hospitality throughout the weekend.
Public Notice of Training Activities
Residents may notice increased activity and visible smoke around the Weyburn Fire Hall training grounds throughout the weekend. These are controlled training exercises and do not pose a threat to public safety.
