City launches education campaign encouraging early conversations with Planning Department before sign installation
Whether it’s a new storefront sign, a portable sign for promotion or a roadside billboard, the City of Weyburn is reminding residents and businesses to connect with the Planning Department before ordering or installing signage.
The City is launching a public education series that breaks down common planning questions in plain language. The first topic is sign permits, because signs are one of the most common items installed before people realize approvals may be required.
“Getting in touch early helps you avoid surprises,” said Shara-Lee Malcom, Planning Coordinator for the City of Weyburn. “In most cases, a quick email or conversation is enough for us to confirm what permits apply and what you’ll need to submit.”
Permits are required to help ensure signs meet safety regulations, placed in the right location and do not block sightlines for drivers or pedestrians. They also keep signage rules consistent across the community so every business is operating under the same standards.
Before you order, print or install anything, most permanent and portable signs require a permit under the City’s Zoning Bylaw, including wall or fence signs, window signs, freestanding signs and portable signs.
The public is encouraged to contact the Planning Department with:
- The type of sign
- The address
- A photo or sketch of what you’re planning
Planning staff will confirm what permits and regulations apply and outline next steps. The City can also flag other approvals that may apply depending on the project, such as zoning requirements or a business license.
The public can also contact the Planning Department by phone or drop by City Hall to speak with staff.
“Your sign should be attracting customers, not creating avoidable delays,” added Malcom. “We want business owners focused on growing their business, so they can move ahead with clarity and confidence.”
