Following last week’s significant rainfall in the Weyburn area, a large volume of water moved through the Souris River system. The appearance and smell of the river can change after these events as naturally occurring organic matter travels with the increased flow.
As a precaution, residents should avoid direct contact with the Souris River until the water clears:
• Do not swim or participate in activities that could result in contact with river water.
• Do not allow pets to enter or drink from the river.
• Do not drink untreated river water.
There are currently no concerns with Weyburn’s municipal drinking water. The City’s water treatment plant receives its source water through an intake at Nickle Lake. Water at the intake is not showing the same discolouration seen in the Souris River, and the treatment plant continues to operate normally.
The Government of Saskatchewan’s Healthy Beaches Program currently lists Nickle Lake Regional Park Beach as suitable for swimming, based on sampling completed July 15. This result applies to the designated beach area at Nickle Lake and not to the Souris River.

The City continues to closely monitor conditions. Updates will be provided should conditions change.
