With winter settling in, our snow removal crews are back on their routes to keep streets safe and passable. As a reminder, the City follows a priority-based snow removal system to ensure essential routes are cleared as quickly and safely as possible.
How snow removal works in Weyburn
The City of Weyburn follows an established Snow Removal Policy that guides how streets and sidewalks are cleared. After a winter storm event:
- First Priority routes are cleared first. These include major roadways, emergency access routes, and high-traffic corridors.
- City Centre typically is performed overnight, after First Priority routes and troubled areas are complete.
- Second Priority routes and school zones follow. A second grading of these routes will be conducted once major clearing operations are complete.
- Collector Street routes (including bus routes) are addressed after Second Priority routes are complete and conditions allow.
- Residential Street routes are typically scheduled according to the Refuse Collection Areas. Residents will be notified through the Weyburn Alerts notification system when clearing will take place in their neighbourhood. Snow will be windrowed to the side of the street.
Winter storm events
During an active storm, snow clearing is focused on maintaining access for emergency responders. Other winter maintenance is kept to a minimum during the storm event. If visibility becomes severely limited or unsafe, all operations will pause until conditions improve to protect both the public and City staff.
Sidewalks
Sidewalks along the designated removal route will be cleared once a storm has passed. Only sidewalks identified on the route map are included. After the route is complete, crews will move on to clear walkways in Jubilee Park, followed by the Tatagwa Trail System.
Sanding
Street sanding is typically completed once a storm has subsided and snow clearing equipment has finished its work. Sanding will also occur following any freezing rain event.
Snow Removal Policy
Our snow removal approach is built around a priority system, helping us respond quickly and effectively during each snowfall.
The City of Weyburn works throughout the winter to keep roads and sidewalks as safe and passable as conditions allow. Even with our crews’ best efforts, western Canadian weather can be unpredictable, and slippery or snow-covered roads may still occur.
Thank you for giving our crews the space they need to work and for helping keep our community safe throughout the winter season.
