From May 3–9, the City of Weyburn is encouraging residents to take simple, practical steps to understand local risks, make a plan and prepare for unexpected situations.
Emergency Preparedness Week is an annual Canada-wide campaign that encourages everyone to understand the hazards in their local area to help prepare for emergencies. This year’s theme, Be Prepared. Know Your Risks. is a reminder that being informed and prepared helps people, families, businesses and communities respond better and recover faster.
“Emergencies don’t come with notice, but preparation gives us a head start,” said City of Weyburn Safey Coordinator Abby Kradovill. “In Weyburn, that means understanding local risks and making sure your household has a plan and an emergency kit in place before they’re needed.”
Although emergencies are unpredictable, preparing for emergencies doesn’t have to be complicated. The City of Weyburn encourages the community to take time this week to:
- Know the risks: Different emergencies can happen in Saskatchewan, such as floods, severe storms, winter weather, and wildfires. Knowing which risks are most likely in your area helps you prepare ahead of time.
- Make a plan: Having a family emergency plan ensures everyone knows what to do, where to go and how to stay in touch during an emergency. Planning in advance helps reduce stress and keeps everyone safer.
- Build a kit: Learn how to prepare an emergency kit with essential supplies. An emergency kit provides the supplies your household needs to take care of yourselves for at least 72 hours. Having food, water and essential items ready means you’re prepared if help can’t arrive right away.
- Sign up for Weyburn Alerts: The City’s notification system sends real‑time alerts about emergencies. Signing up ensures you receive important information on what to do, where to go and what to expect.
