Contractors working on major projects in Weyburn have reported repeated thefts of detour and traffic control signage. The most serious incidents have occurred on Township Road 90, where signs have been stolen on three separate occasions, and on 16th St., which has seen two incidents.
In total, 12 signs, three stands, and one set of highway legs have been taken, resulting in nearly $10,000 in costs for replacement and labour. Beyond the financial impact, stolen signage creates serious safety risks:
- Drivers may be sent down unsuitable roads, including routes not designed for heavy truck traffic.
- Missing signs can cause traffic delays and confusion.
- Vehicles may unknowingly enter active worksites, putting both drivers and workers at risk.
The Weyburn Police Service reminds the public that tampering with or removing traffic control devices is a serious offence. These signs are critical to keeping roadways safe, guiding drivers through construction zones, and protecting the workers completing essential infrastructure improvements. Read the WPS report here.
Residents are asked to respect signage in work zones and report any suspicious activity related to traffic control devices. By leaving signs in place, the community helps ensure construction projects can move forward safely and without unnecessary delays.
